Everyone deserves access to healthcare. There are many social determinants of health including location, income, education and job status. Human-centered innovation can improve health equity by understanding how all of these can impact health and developing medical insights to help create new self-care solutions.

At Bayer, we look at medical insights as a fresh discovery about human unmet or underserved health needs based on evidence, that explores why it occurs and enables action to deliver better consumer solutions, healthcare outcomes, competitive advantage and behavioral changes.

Self-care Innovation to Address Social and Environmental Determinants of Health

Socio-economic factors can play an impactful role in our health and wellness, including affecting how genetic predispositions are expressed. This is especially true in low-income communities where often unexpected environmental factors can impact everything from allergies and pain to cardiovascular health.

To fuel our progress and uncover opportunities where we can intervene, we launched the Research Initiative for Self-Care Equity (RISE) to understand better the socioeconomic impacts of people's health and to use these insights to inform our roadmap for accessible self-care innovation.

Through these insights, we can start to understand how environmental and socio-economic factors create and exacerbate health challenges and design everyday health innovations to address them.

The insights from RISE are just the start. As we seek to enable people to take more control of their personal health, uncovering the layers of this research is imperative. We look forward to strengthening health systems around the world, whether it’s by creating new solutions to meet their unique needs, making programs more affordable in underserved communities, or expanding health education.

Bayer China recently uncovered that 80% of upper GI sufferers experience indigestion and more than 90% of digestive enzyme treatments in China come from hospitals. Turning these insights into innovation, the team launched a new formulation of Talcid Digestive. This self-care innovation puts consumers’ health into their own hands to relieve lack of appetite and indigestion through patented double-coated pellets with four types of digestive enzymes.
