Statement on RoundUp Active Ingredient Safety
A recent, deeply flawed report contains false claims about the active ingredients in Roundup Lawn & Garden products.
The active ingredients in all Roundup Lawn & Garden products have been thoroughly studied, reviewed and approved by independent experts at the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and used safely and effectively in many different weed-control products from a variety of companies for decades. The report reaches its misleading conclusion through a methodology that is entirely inconsistent with how leading regulatory and health experts measure risk in how people use these products in the real world and in accordance with the label. Simply put, consumers can feel confident safely using Roundup products.

All Roundup weed-control products, including the Lawn & Garden products formulated for residential use, have clear labels listing the active ingredients. As part of the company’s stated and well-publicized 5-point plan to manage and mitigate the risks of Roundup litigation in the U.S, we have been transparent about the change in formulation. The change was made public at the time through a company release that was covered by media, as well as discussed in other venues by Bayer leadership. And, of course, EPA review processes are transparent for the public to see.
We took this action exclusively to help manage litigation risk and not because of any safety concerns with glyphosate. The vast majority of legal claims have come from residential lawn and garden users, so this step largely eliminates a source of future claims about glyphosate. This action does not impact any of our glyphosate-based agriculture or professional products.
We are no longer producing or selling glyphosate-based Roundup products for the U.S. residential lawn & garden (L&G) market. We began producing and selling the new Roundup U.S. L&G products with the new formulations in late 2022. While some quantities of the original formula of Roundup L&G products – which are also EPA-approved – may remain on store shelves, it is no longer being produced or sold by Bayer.
Roundup products for the lawn and garden consumer market are clearly labeled. We follow the direction of the EPA, which reviews and approves these products. All new formulas are marked with a prominent, “Exclusive Formula” banner and the list of active ingredients on the front label of the product.
