Supporting Good Health in Pregnancy
Pregnancy is an exciting time, but also a time when expectant parents have a lot to think about. Is the baby doing well? Does it have everything it needs? Bayer knows which vitamins are important for the mother-to-be and her baby.
Yan Li can still remember it clearly. She was lying on the bed resting, when she suddenly thought there was something wrong with her belly. Was her belly rumbling? Yan Li was 18 weeks pregnant when she first felt her baby move. At that time, the baby was around 12 centimeters long from crown to rump and weighed about 125 grams. It was moving around energetically as all unborn babies do and kept pushing gently against the wall of her uterus. “When I realized what was happening I started to find comfort from the movement as it’s a reminder that everything is okay,” says Li.
However, like many expectant parents, 34-year-old Yan Li and her husband sometimes also worried about things. Is the unborn baby doing well? Does it have everything it needs? The couple wanted to be sure that they were doing their very best for their baby. They did a lot of background reading and followed a healthy diet. Yan Li knew that an unborn baby needs plenty of nutrients and minerals to ensure it develops well.
Despite all the precautionary measures taken during pregnancy, it is not always possible to obtain enough of every nutrient through diet alone. Ensuring the body has all the micro and macronutrients it requires will support the baby’s development, helping to reduce the risk of malformations including mental impairment. When Yan Li was at the hospital for her pregnancy test and the result was positive, the doctor congratulated the expectant mom and recommended Elevit™ to her.
An unborn baby grows rapidly so it is extremely important for its development that it receives good care from pregnancy through the nursing period. Vitamins and minerals help the baby to build bones as well as enable the brain to develop and the organs to mature. The composition of Elevit™ is tailored toward all of these things. For the period before pregnancy and first 12 weeks there is ElevitTM 1. For trimesters 2 and 3, while baby’s organs are developing, there’s ElevitTM 2. And after baby is born and through breastfeeding, ElevitTM 3 supports ongoing baby development. Friends who had had a positive experience with Elevit™ recommended it to Yan Li.
“Elevit™ is backed by robust clinical evidence that shows how the formula can protect against the risk of birth defects,” comments Helena Habte-Gabr, Global Brand Director, Bayer Consumer Health. “We understand that moms-to-be like Yan Li want to protect their baby during pregnancy and so they should feel reassured that they really are giving their baby the very best start in life by taking Elevit™ throughout their pregnancy journey.”
Yan Li was working as an electrical engineer at a substation in Tianjin, a large harbor city in northeastern China, and got her daily exercise by walking to work. “Before my pregnancy I walked over 10,000 steps a day and I was able to work right up until the day the baby was born,” she says. That corresponds to a distance of around six kilometers a day. Yan Li will return to work six months after her baby is born.
During her pregnancy Yan Li did a lot of yoga and felt the little kicks in her belly when she did so. Was it exhausting? Sure it was sometimes. Although you would not know it looking at Yan Li. Morning sickness? “I didn’t have it,” says Yan Li. She and her husband are relaxed, even when they have a lot going on in their lives.
They have since had a healthy baby girl and named her Xiyan Zhang. The parents did not discover the baby’s sex until the birth. “We wanted it to be a surprise and bought onesies for both girls and boys,” says the smiling mother, “I’m so happy our precious little baby arrived in the world safely and now she’s here, I can’t stop looking at her!”
Key Micronutrients During Pregnancy
- Folic acid reduces the risk of the baby developing a neural tube defect. This means, for example, abnormalities such as spina bifida.
- Iodine is important for the healthy mental development of the baby.
- Iron supports blood formation.
- Docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) is an omega-3 fatty acid that helps to ensure optimum brain and eye development in fetuses and nursing infants.
- Vitamin D is needed for bone growth.
