A growing world population and the increasing burden on natural ecosystems are among the biggest challenges humanity is currently facing. As a global leader in healthcare and nutrition, Bayer is uniquely positioned to provide solutions to these problems. Guided by our mission “Health for all, Hunger for none”, we work to improve access to innovative and sustainable healthcare solutions, as well as to create opportunities for smallholder farmers to prosper sustainably.
Bayer's mission "Health for all, Hunger for none" reflects our dedication of providing healthcare and nutrition to underserved communities, as well as our focus on developing products and technologies that contribute to a world without hunger. We envision a world in which diseases are not only treated but effectively prevented or cured, in which people can take better care of their own health needs, and in which enough food is produced while respecting our planet’s natural resources.
A growing and aging world population requires an adequate supply of food and improved medical care. With our innovative products, we are contributing to finding solutions to some of the major challenges of our time. With life expectancy continuing to rise, we improve the quality of life for a growing population by focusing our research and development activities on preventing, alleviating and treating diseases. We are also making an important contribution to providing a reliable supply of high-quality food, feed and plant-based raw materials.
Access to Medicine and Health
We are addressing important medical needs and expanding access to our products and services, in both the prescription and the over-the counter sector. This also includes Vitamin and mineral deficiencies that are a major public health problem in underserved communities, with women and children being particularly vulnerable. We are thus helping to improve access to healthcare for a growing world population. We are actively pursuing the following access targets and commitments:
- Increase availability and affordability of our innovative pharma products in low- and middle-income countries
- Support 100 million women in low- and middle-income countries with modern contraception
- Support 100 million people in under-served communities with self-care
- Expand access to essential vitamins and minerals to 50 million people in underserved communities by 2030
Our efforts and the progress we did in this space have also been acknowledged by the Access to Medicine Index (ATMI) that is regularly published by the Access to Medicine Foundation. Bayer was ranked 10th in 2024. With that, Bayer has achieved a Top Ten ranking in a second consecutive assessment cycle.

Empowering Smallholder farmers
Smallholder farmers hold incredible potential on our journey towards global food security when they can access the modern agricultural solutions they need to increase their productivity, better their livelihoods and work more sustainably. That’s why we’re working directly with smallholder farmers around the world to make a massive impact, together. We are actively pursuing our smallholder access target, to support 100 million smallholder farmers in low- and middle-income countries with our products and services.
Read more about how we’re making a difference in smallholder farmers’ lives: Impact on smallholder livelihoods | Bayer Global and about how farmers perceive our programs – notable examples are described in the impact studies performed by 60 Decibels on smallholder farmers in Kenya, India, Bangladesh as well as small-scale cattle ranchers in Mexico and Honduras.
Leveraging our capabilities with a One Bayer approach
We have piloted a One Bayer access approach in Indonesia to create impact beyond the agricultural sphere. Therefore, we are leveraging our BLF infrastructure by
- Nutrition education in partnership with NGOs and local governments (Smallholder farmers as multipliers)
- Access to prenatal nutrition (multiple micronutrient supplementation) for pregnant women
- Women empowerment: Training for women in family planning, healthcare, self-care, and stunting prevention
We are in the process of advancing this pilot to India and assessing the applicability in other countries and regions.
