Bayer supports improved access to information and education on the reproductive health for young people
Bayer supports Asia Pacific Council on Contraception (APCOC) Indonesia to educate and dialog with young people about reproductive health and “Young Empowerment”
Jakarta, 3 October 2017 – This year, the World Contraception Day (WCD) enters its first decade. Bayer Indonesia supports APCOC Indonesia to educate and dialog with young people about reproductive health and “Young Empowerment.”
According to World Health Organization (WHO) 41% of 208 million pregnancies worldwide are unplanned. 11% of all births are given by young women between the ages of 15 and 19. That's about 16 million teenage pregnancies a year.
The United Nations estimates, from 2017 to 2050, half of the world's population growth will be concentrated in nine countries: India, Nigeria, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Pakistan, Ethiopia, the Republic of Tanzania, the United States, Uganda, and Indonesia. This population growth requires attention from all parties. Demographic bonus can give opportunity when it offers quality young generation. "Our goal at APCOC is to educate and empower young people so they can openly discuss reproductive health and contraception issues with parents, teachers, and doctors. Accordingly, we need to cooperate with related parties to create a good quality young generation for the future. Therefore, APCOC collaborates with Bayer to educate and inform young people about reproductive health and contracption today. Sources of information that are reliable and able to accomodate convenience for a transparent discussion are important for young people in order for them to take the right decisions on reproductive health," said Prof.Dr. Biran Affandi, SpOG (K).
Building awareness on reproductive health has always become one of Bayer’s concerns. Access, availability, and ability to get the service are critical to the success of family planning. In addition, education is most important. Bayer together with fourteen international partners launched Your Life – a global campaign for young people to educate and increase the awareness that every pregnancy is a wanted pregnancy.
Bayer Global also supports GFK Healthcare (GFK) study about 'Youth and Contraception'. The study on 'Youth and Contraception' examines the attitudes of young people aged between 13 and 25 to sexuality and contraception. GfK Health surveyed a total of 3,013 young men and women from 15 countries in Europe, Asia, the Pacific region, as well as Latin and North America. The study's findings can be found on the World Contraception Day website (in English only): www.your-life.com.

About World Contraception Day
World Contraception Day takes place every year on September 26. It is a well-established official awareness day that puts sexual rights and family planning in central focus in more than 70 countries and generates political, media and public interest. The day marks the annual highlight of the ongoing activities of the “Your Life” campaign, which pursues the vision of a world where every pregnancy is wanted. To achieve this goal, fourteen international partners have formed into the World Contraception Day Coalition which comprises NGOs, a governmental organization as well as scientific and medical associations and is supported by Bayer. The WCD Coalition calls on governments, community leaders, healthcare providers and educators to help young people build contraception into their plans. It strives to provide young people with all the tools, skills and knowledge they need to take control of their lives, make informed decisions and build better futures for themselves.
