Food Chain Partnership: Working Together for Sustainable Agriculture is Key in Achieving Food Security
Collaboration along the food chain is effective in driving improvements in food security, environmental sustainability and economic opportunity at the national level.
JAKARTA, Indonesia, 9 March 2018 – Collaboration along the food chain is effective in driving improvements in food security, environmental sustainability and economic opportunity at the national level. It is based on the experience of Indonesian Chamber of Commerce (KADIN) which has been piloting partnership projects under Partnership for Indonesia’s Sustainable Agriculture (PISAgro) since 2012, which Bayer participating. The projects were aimed to catalyse multistakeholder partnerships from upstream to downstream along the food chain and proven to improve the productivity and welfare of farmers.

One of the most important players in the chain is the agriculture input and technology provider. Company like Bayer plays a big role in the collaboration by providing technology and assisting farmers in the field to make sure the farmers to achieve high yields and avoid harvest failure.
The Food Chain Partnership is an innovative business model developed by Bayer Crop Science Division in which growers, traders, processors and retailers work together on integrated crop solutions according to sustainable agricultural principles for the benefit of everyone involved.
By joining the partnership, farmers can enjoy improvement in welfare as they can increase their yields and get off-take guarantee. Not only the company buys their produce but also provide post-harvest trainings, so farmers are well informed about industrial standard and the price of the produce.
Bayer has been doing this approach with smallholder farmers in West Java, Central Java and Kalimantan. Bayer provides Good Farming Practices training to help the farmers increase their farm productivity and quality of the yields. To date, through the implementation with 20,000 smallholder farmers, Bayer has helped to increase their productivity by 16% on average and increase farmers’ income by 30%.
